LEADER'S DIGEST - APRIL 2018

The premier camps of the midwest, nestled in the pristine Northwoods of Wisconsin - Where Camping is King!

Welcome

We would like to thank you for attending Camp this summer. This newsletter is the second in the series we are calling "The Leader's Digest." We are hoping to highlight topics that are important to you and answer the questions you didn't even know you had. These newsletters will also keep you on track with important dates coming up. If you still have some questions after reading this and consulting the Leaders Guidebook, please feel free to contact Samoset Camping  (715-365-3111 or camp@samoset.org) and Scott or Troy will be happy to assist you.

Register Campers

If you have not already entered names for your scouts, please do so soon. By the end of the month the remaining reserved space for each unit will be removed to get accurate numbers for supplies and to open space for units on our waiting list. If your unit is already all registered and no longer needs the extra reserved space, just let Samoset Camping know and we will remove your space early and your account won't show additional costs.

Youth Protection Policy Changes

The safety of our youth is of greatest importance at camp. Therefore, all adults accompanying a unit to Tesomas must be registered as a leader, including competition of a criminal background check and youth protection training. This is completed with your local council. Two weeks prior to camp, we will ask you to submit an official roster from your council to prove that all adults are registered members of the BSA and have completed youth protection training.

Pre-order Camp T-Shirts

Pre-order custom apparel online for everyone in your unit to wear at camp. Multiple items are available and each can be customized with your unit number and city.  But hurry! Order deadline: Friday, May 4, 2018!  Order will be added to your unit camp bill after May 15.

Payment Reminders
  • The first $75 (due April 15) for each Scout/Leader is his/her reservation deposit and is non-refundable, but transferable to another Scout/Leader in the same unit as a new reservation.
  • Remaining fees are due June 1.
  • Campers registered after April 15 may be required to pay a $15 late fee (excluding new Scouts who join your unit after this date).
  • Unit leaders may make payments and register campers online.
  • Send all payments to the Samoset Office (3511 Camp Phillips Road, Weston, WI 54476), with a note of which unit to apply the payment to (this note can just be the receipt from Doubleknot).

Precamp Forms

Health Forms

Tesomas Campers will need parts A, B, and C filled out including a doctor's signature. These can be mailed to camp prior to arrival (please do so about 2 weeks before your week).

Akela's World campers need parts A and B (no doctor signature). These can also be mailed in advance, but is not necessary.

All health forms must be copies as we are required by law to retain the copies for two years. Health form available here.

Precamp Swim Tests

If your unit wishes to speed up the check in process they may do swim tests prior to arriving at camp. If you do this please send the results to camp about two weeks in advance and your buddy tags will be filled out before you arrive. Information and the proper paperwork is here.

Akela's World Adventures

Adventures are collections of themed, multidisciplinary activities. Each Cub Scout rank requires the completion of seven adventures. During their time at Akela’s World, Scouts will have the opportunity to complete several adventures. There is no preregistration, just sign up at camp. Adventures are during regular program time.  Scouts may not be able to complete all the requirements at camp.

Tesomas Advancement

Units can now login and register their Scouts for their desired activities.  If you do not have a login, please contact the camping department.

A detailed schedule of merit badges is posted on our website and on pages 20-22 in the Leader Guidebook.  The advancement schedule is simple to follow, but the most common question is if the scouts need to attend every time that a Merit Badge is offered. The Merit Badges are every day of the week at that time. Camping, for example, has four different classes a week; scouts only need to attend one hour a day, not all four.

You can make changes to your advancement until two weeks prior to your week at camp.

Signup for 2019

Units are encouraged to reserve space early, as popular weeks fill up quickly.  A non-refundable reservation fee of $5 per camper is due with your reservation. These fees will apply toward your camp fees. Units will be allowed to signup and mail a check to the council office to cover this deposit.  To sign up for 2019 during the month of April, please contact Samoset Camping camp@samoset.org or 715-365-3111.
